Clare Allan is the author of “Poppy Shakespeare”.
Her work has been published in “The Guardian” and several magazines. In 2002,
Clare Allan won the “Harpers & Queen”/Orange for Fiction short story
competition with a tale called “The Meeting”, the story of a friendship between
2 women in a psychiatric hospital (and therefore possibly related to “Poppy
Shakespeare” – indeed, the novel was inspired by Clare Allan’s own experience
of being a patient in the mental health system for a 3rd of her
life). “Poppy Shakespeare” was shortlisted for the 2006 Guardian First Book
Award. Clare Allan has lived in London for the past 10 years.

Inspiration
– Clare Allan writes frankly and brilliantly about the experiences that led her
to write “Poppy Shakespeare”. Incredibly, the fact that she regarded herself as
a writer was regarded as a symptom of her mental illness, even though she’d had
articles published in “The Guardian”
