Bollywood Nights Shobhaa De

A Flavour of the Book: “Aasha Rani had lost her balance and had fallen into the drum; soaked to the skin, and spluttering for air.  The mystery man had helped Aasha Rani out, a sardonic smile playing on his lips. In her confusion she hadn’t noticed that her drenched skirt had climbed up to her crotch.  Flushing and blushing furiously, she had pulled herself up muttering, ‘So sorry, so sorry.’  He’d stared at her, looked down at her exposed legs, shrugged and walked away.”

The Authortrek View: “Bollywood Nights portrays a surprisingly sleazy underworld behind the more conservative image of Bollywood, in which the casting couch is much employed, a world that seems to resemble the much more mucky backwaters of Hollywood.  No doubt this is the main reason why the novel was such a huge hit when first published, as the Indian literary world looks to be far more liberal than its cinema.  This world, for all its sauciness, is as gaudy and sickening as the novel’s back cover.  At first, it is hard to identify with the heroine, Aasha Rani, as she is pimped by her mother to be a success in the movies, and as Aasha makes the most disastrous choices in her love life.  Akshay Arora does not seem worthy of Aasha’s attentions as he cruelly tosses her aside, but Aasha cannot help her feelings.  However, Shobhaa De then does a very clever thing by allowing Aasha some respite, some time to develop, and for a while it seems that she has truly settled down.  In reality though, Aasha just has more to lose, perhaps maybe even her life…  Shobhaa De has expertly built the way to a killer ending for Bollywood Nights, a novel that does truly satisfy in the end”.
