Being Emily Anne Donovan

A Flavour of the Book: “It made a big difference tae my family.  Of course they’d known I was good at art, just like I was good at English or History, but Art was a frivolous subject, no something tae base your life choices on.  But the cheque for a thousand quid changed that.  Da couldna believe it, kept shaking his heid in amazement and saying, You’ll need tae take care of this, Fiona, as if I was gonnae drop it in the street or accidentally tear it up or something”.

The Authortrek View: Being Emily is a fabulous read.  Anne Donovan has a great talent for writing compelling narratives.  As you’ll see from the above extract, it’s written in a slight Scots accent, but this is very easy to get into.  Anne Donovan has created a very convincing character in Fiona.  Her life has more than its fair share of its ups and downs, but these plot twists keep the reader enthralled without ever verging into melodrama.  Anne Donovan is such a fantastic writer that it comes as no surprise to see that her work has been shortlisted for many literary awards.  Indeed, Being Emily is so brilliant that it should get Anne Donovan shortlisted for a few more awards, and nobody would argue if it walked off with any, such is the high quality.  In addition to this, Anne Donovan’s prose is very accessible – she makes writing look so easy, such is her seemingly effortless skill.  Her plots are also very good – I couldn’t wait to get to the end to find out what happened to Fiona.
