Ariana Franklin is the
pseudonym of a well-known author of historical novels, Diana Norman, wife of
the film critic Barry Norman (thanks to Authortrek reader Sally Williams for
alerting us to this). It was reported last year that the first novel under this
pseudonym would be called “The House of Special Purpose”, about Anna Anderson, the woman
who claimed to be Anastasia (she claims to have escaped the execution squad
sent to kill Tsar Nicholas II’s family). However, an historical thriller of the
same name, written by Christopher Hyde, was published in 2004, so it looks as
though the title of Ariana Franklin’s novel was changed to “City of
Shadows” (ISBN
0060817267). The novel has been
described as “Robert Harris meets Cabaret”. “The
Mistress of the Art of Death” was the second Ariana Franklin novel to be
published (2007).
Authortrek reader Sally
Williams writes that
“I spent... this weekend... deeply
engrossed in Mistress of the Art of Death”
