An Aristocratic Affair Janet Gleeson

A Flavour of the Book: "As the illicit transactions spiralled beyond Harriet's control, the effect on her mental well-being was devastating.  She grew increasingly overwrought, shadowed by the constant terror of public shame and Duncannon's wrath should he discover the truth of her predicament..."

The Authortrek View: When I first received this book, I wasn't sure that the world needed a biography of another Eighteenth Century predecessor to Princess Diana, after Amanda Foreman's highly praised Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.  However, Georgiana's sister, Harriet Spencer, had such a glorious life in her own right that such doubts were soon discarded.  Harriet had fabulous connections, even encountering Marie Antoinette as a child.  She also played a large role in the politics of day, as she was a Whig who did a great deal to support Charles James Fox.  Harriet also had run-ins with the Prince of Wales and with the Irish playwright and Whig politician Sheridan, although some of these, particularly with regards to the latter, were far more welcome than others.  The aristocratic affair of the title, however, refers to Harriet's dalliance with Lord Granville Leveson Gower, who was 12 years younger than her...  Janet Gleeson's account of Harriet's life is truly fascinating, and she is a superb writer, who very ably depicts how the culture shifted and changed over Harriet's many years.  An Aristocratic Affair is a fantastic read.
