Alai’s
novel “Red Poppies” won China’s highest literary prize, the Mao Dun, in 2000,
after many Chinese publishers had rejected it for years due to the novel being
set in Tibet. The novel was later
turned into a dance drama by the Hong Kong Dance Company.
