Aimee Therres interview, author of My Affair with Alfred

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD, USA.

What was it that first got you into writing and when did you start writing?

I started by telling stories when I was little to see if anyone would believe them.  My grandfather would pretend to believe the outrageous tales I would spin.  As I got older I would write stories and illustrate them.  The main character always looked remarkably like me and was a princess by the end of the story.

In high school I took a creative writing course and joined the literary magazine.  From that point on I have been writing regularly.

Which writers have influenced you the most?

I have been influenced by Ernest Hemingway and T.S. Eliot.

What kind of things do you write?

I write poetry and fiction mostly, on occasion I write non-fiction.

What are you working on now?

I am currently trying to write a screenplay.  It is much harder than I ever imagined it would be.

What is your writing day like?

If only I had whole days to write…

On the rare days that I can fit a whole day in writing, I will usually wake up with a strong idea in my head and I have to get it down.  I will then go to the store and get some Coke or Cherry Coke and then sit at my computer typing until I get a migraine.

What's the most exciting thing about writing for you?

When I've worked an idea around in my brain until it is ready to burst out of me, and then I sit down to type faster than my typing teacher ever imagined I could.

What's the most frustrating thing about writing for you?

Not always being fruitful in my labors.  Sometimes no matter how long I try with a piece, it just does not seem to work.

What's the best piece of feedback that you've had from your audience?

After reading my novel, a woman was begging me to find out what happened next to my characters.  I am always satisfied when I read a book and really care about the characters, so it made me proud that someone read my book and really cared about my characters.

Do you write for a particular audience, or is your first priority to satisfy your own creativity?

I usually don't look towards an audience and just write what I have inside of me.
