Alison Bauld was born in Sydney in 1944. She first displayed her musical
prowess as a piano student at the Conservatorium of New South Wales, where she
was taught by Alexander Sverjensky. She was awarded a gold medal for piano by
the Australian Music Examinations Board in 1959. Alison Bauld was then drawn to
the theatre, and she became a student at the National Institute of Dramatic
Art. She became a professional actor, and toured in Shakespearian productions
for a year, as well as doing some TV and radio drama. Alison also wrote the
music for several stage productions while completing a Batchelor of Music
degree at the University of Sydney. The university then awarded her a Moss
Travelling Scholarship, which led to her going to the UK in 1969 to study with
Elisabeth Lutyens and Hans Keller. In 1973, Alison was a finalist in the Radcliffe
Competition with her composition “One Pearl”. The following year, Alison was
awarded a doctorate in composition by the University of York. She has been
commissioned by the BBC several times, for “Van Diemen’s Land” (which employed
quadrophonic radio effects), “Richard III”, and “Once Upon a Time”. In 1974, a
Gulbenkian Dance Award for composition allowed her to observe and be attached
to Rambert, The Royal Ballet, Scottish Workshop, and the London Contemporary
Dance Company. In 1975 Alison Bauld became Music Director of the Laban Centre
for Dance, Goldsmiths College, London University. The Donmar Warehouse
commissioned Alison Bauld’s opera “Nell” in 1987. Alison Bauld’s interest in
music education led to writing a 3 volume piano tutor, “Play Your Way”. Marcia
Gronewold has written an MA thesis on Alison Bauld’s music, and Joyce Andrews
has written an article on her songs for the “American National Association of
Teachers’ Journal of Singing”. Alison Bauld wrote “No More of Love”, a song for
soprano and piano, especially for inclusion in “Mozart’s Sister”. Alison Bauld
lives in London. “Mozart’s Sister”, her debut novel, may be serialized by ABC
radio.
