Juan Carlos Onetti's A Brief Life is a fairly impenetrable
novel that offers the reader few rewards. The novel flips between its
unlikeable anti-hero, Brausen, and his creation, the nondescript Diaz Grey.
Even when the novel is being narrated by one of its characters, the reader is
left with few insights. Contrary to its title, the novel is far from brief, and
could have benefited from some hefty edits in Onetti's day. There are a few set
piece scenes, such as Grey's initial encounter with Elena, but these are few
and far between, and ruminated upon endlessly. God knows what the film script
Onetti was working upon would turn out like. There are a few other set piece
scenes, which seem to serve very little function beyond their initial effect. I
did re-read A Brief Life, in an effort to be fair to the novel, but
I still hated it.
